Abstract
234 monitoring stations operating during the 2016-2018 period were identified thanks to EEA European Air Quality Portal in the in the Alpine region for measuring the following pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, nitrogen oxides (NOx) including nitrogen dioxide(NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), benzene (C6H6), ozone (O3), lead (Pb), Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), carbon monoxide (CO), cadmium (Cd). Two-thirds of these stations are located in suburban or urban environments and one-third in rural environments. This map illustrates their geographical distribution, together with that of 39 additional stations belonging to the local Swiss monitoring networks and operating in the same period. Of all these stations, 14% and 78% are located at altitudes higher than 1,000 m.a.s.l. and 1,500 m.a.s.l. respectively. Adapting an existing methodology, it has been estimated that approximately 86% of these stations displayed are situated in valleys (see the original text of the RSA9 for details).
